Leaders are Managers but Managers are not Leaders
There are different styles of providing direction and guidance in the organizational hierarchy. Leader and manager are two such persons, who are similar but quite different.

According to Joan Cheverie, leaders are defined as people who produce change, creating future viability to the organization by aligning people to a vision. Basically it is defined as aligning people to a vision, providing with direction and motivating them to accomplish it.
Manager on the other hand is defined by Joan as a person who manages complexity by planning, budgeting, staffing, describing jobs, measuring performance and problem solving. Basically they plan, organize, control and coordinate to achieve the desired outcome.
- Leaders create a vision whereas Managers create a goal.
- Leaders are change agents whereas Managers maintain the status quo (sticks with things that worked well before and improvises on them).
- Leaders are unique, Managers copy.
- Leaders take risks, but Managers control risks.
- Leaders think long term gain whereas Managers are more on short term gains.
- Leaders grow personality, whereas Managers rely on existing proven skills.
- Leaders build people and relationships whereas Managers build systems and processes.
- Leaders coach but Managers direct.
- Leaders create fans but Managers create employees.
Finally according to Whetten, David and Cameron,Kim managers should possess skills such as decision making, strategy and tactics, and problem solving that are equipped with focusing on a task and managing people. Leaders on the other hand is stated to possess, counselling, coaching, teaching and mentoring in order to provide people with a vision, motivation, inspiration, team evolution and means of communication.
